AI Search Statistics 2026: The Numbers South African Businesses Need to Know

How big is AI search really? Verified 2026 statistics on ChatGPT usage, Google AI Overviews, zero-click searches and AI citations — and what each number means for South African businesses.

The headline numbers

900M+
people use ChatGPT every week in 2026 — up from ~800 million in late 2025
1.5B
people see Google AI Overviews every month
65%
of Google searches now end without a click to any website

AI-powered search has crossed from novelty to default behaviour. ChatGPT alone reaches an estimated billion people monthly, and Google — still the world’s front door to the web — now answers a growing share of queries itself before anyone clicks a result.

AI answers are eating the click

The clearest trend in the data is the rise of the zero-click search: the question gets answered on the results page, and no website earns the visit.

~65%

And the more AI is involved in the search, the fewer clicks survive:

Meanwhile, the AI surface itself keeps growing — analysis of 21.9 million queries found AI Overviews appearing in roughly twice as many searches at the end of 2025 as at its start:

What gets cited — the stats to build a strategy on

Research into which content AI engines actually reference found two patterns worth acting on:

  • Content containing statistics, citations and quotations achieved roughly 30–40% higher visibility in AI responses than content without them. Engines prefer sources that look like evidence, not advertising.
  • Recently updated pages earn significantly more citations — one analysis found pages updated within the previous two months earned about 28% more AI citations than stale ones. Freshness is a ranking signal in AI retrieval, not just classic SEO.

This is why our GEO service prioritises evidence-rich, regularly updated content over volume.

The South African picture

Country-level AI search data is thinner than global data, but the direction is unambiguous:

  • South Africa has one of the continent’s most developed internet populations — DataReportal’s Digital reports put the country at tens of millions of internet users with penetration above 70%, overwhelmingly mobile-first.
  • Adoption of AI tools is growing faster in lower- and middle-income countries than in high-income ones — OpenAI’s own usage research in 2025 measured growth rates in lower-income nations at several times those of wealthy markets. Africa and the Middle East already account for a meaningful share of ChatGPT traffic.
  • Google has rolled AI Overviews out to South African search results, which means the zero-click dynamics above are not a US phenomenon to prepare for — they are already changing how South Africans find businesses.

Put plainly: the global numbers arrive here on a short delay, and the AI answers shaping SA buying decisions are being written now — from whatever sources are currently available.

Test your own AI visibility right now

Replace the brackets, then paste each prompt into ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. If competitors get named and you don't, you've found your gap.

  • Who is the best [your service] in [your city]?
  • I need a [your service] in South Africa — who do you recommend and why?
  • Compare the top [your service] providers in [your city].

Found a gap? Our free AI visibility audit runs this test properly — across dozens of real buying questions, with a written report.

What this means for your business

  1. The click economy is shrinking; the answer economy is growing. Every quarter, more of your market’s buying questions are answered without a single website visit.
  2. A typical AI answer names only a handful of businesses. Combined with rising usage, this concentrates discovery: early winners in each industry become the default recommendation, and engines keep citing what they’ve already cited.
  3. The playbook is measurable. Statistics, evidence, structured data, freshness and consistent citations are quantified advantages — the exact levers of AI search optimisation, not guesswork.

Sources

Figures compiled June 2026 from published industry research and reports, including DataReportal’s Digital 2025: South Africa (internet population), OpenAI usage announcements and adoption research (ChatGPT user counts, regional growth), Semrush-published analyses of AI Overview prevalence and zero-click rates, and aggregated AI citation studies reported by Superlines and Exposure Ninja. Where estimates varied between sources, we used the more conservative figure.
