How Much Does SEO & AI Search Optimisation Cost in South Africa? (2026 Pricing Guide)
Real rand figures: what SEO, AEO and GEO actually cost in South Africa in 2026, what drives the price, what you should get for your money — and the red flags that mean you should walk away.
Why almost nobody publishes prices (and why we do)
Ask ten South African agencies what SEO costs and you’ll get ten versions of “it depends” — usually followed by a discovery call and a quote you can’t compare with anything. The “it depends” part is genuinely true, as we’ll show below. But hiding every number behind a sales call serves agencies, not businesses.
So here are real figures: what the market charges, what we charge, and what should be included at each level — so you can make a decision with full information, whether or not you choose us.
What the South African market charges in 2026
Pricing varies enormously, but based on published rate cards and what clients share with us, this is the landscape:
| Service | Typical SA market range |
|---|---|
| Freelance SEO (hourly) | R350 – R900 per hour |
| Small-agency SEO retainer | R3,000 – R8,000 per month |
| Mid-size agency SEO retainer | R8,000 – R20,000 per month |
| Large agency / competitive industries | R20,000 – R50,000+ per month |
| AI search / GEO services (still rare in SA) | R5,000 – R25,000+ per month |
| Once-off SEO audits | R2,500 – R15,000 |
Three things explain the spread: competition (ranking a plumber in a small town costs less effort than a law firm in Sandton), scope (a five-page site needs less work than a five-hundred-page e-commerce store), and overheads (big-agency account managers and offices are in the price, whether they help your rankings or not).
What we charge at AI Search Pro
Our model is built for South African SMEs, which is why our numbers look different:
- SEO Foundations — from R750 per month. Technical SEO, on-page optimisation and local search. The base layer described on our SEO Foundations page.
- AI Search Optimisation — from R1,250 per month. Visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, with monthly AI citation tracking. Details on our AI Search Optimisation page.
- Current special: the complete package — R1,499 per month. SEO + AEO + GEO combined into one programme. Valid until the end of July 2026. After the free audit we confirm the scope in writing, and the price is fixed — no surprise extras.
“From” means exactly that: a straightforward local-service website starts at those figures; larger sites or highly competitive industries are quoted after the free AI visibility audit, so you see the reasoning behind the number before spending a cent.
Why so much lower than the market table above? Lean overheads, productised delivery, and a deliberate bet: AI search is so new in South Africa that the businesses willing to start now shouldn’t be priced out of it.
What your money should buy — at any agency
Whatever you pay, a legitimate SEO or AI search provider should give you:
- A real audit before any promise. If they quote without examining your site and competitors, the quote is fiction.
- A written scope. Which pages, which questions, which deliverables, each month.
- Reporting tied to business outcomes. Rankings and AI mention rates are means; enquiries and revenue are the end. Reports should show both, in plain language.
- White-hat methods only. Shortcut tactics get sites penalised — and a penalised site is invisible to AI engines too.
- Your assets in your name. Your Google Business Profile, Search Console and analytics should belong to you, not the agency.
Red flags that mean walk away
- Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed ChatGPT mentions. Nobody controls Google’s or OpenAI’s outputs. Honest providers guarantee work and measurement, not algorithm outcomes — we explain why on our GEO service page.
- Long lock-in contracts. Results should retain you, not paperwork.
- R299-per-month “SEO”. At that price the work is software-generated directory spam at best. It can do active harm.
- No mention of AI search at all in 2026. If your provider’s strategy ends at blue links, you’re paying for visibility in a shrinking channel — see our breakdown of AEO vs GEO vs SEO.
The bottom line
Budget realistically from R750–R1,500 per month for a small business starting out, and treat anything above that as a function of your industry’s competitiveness — not the agency’s office address. And before you spend anything, measure where you stand: our free AI visibility audit shows how AI engines answer your customers’ questions today, with a written report that’s yours to keep whoever you hire.
